The Habersham Woods Gardens Tour
A report on a local event in Savannah, GA
Genre: Event Journalism
The Habersham Woods Garden Tour, hosted by Savannah Garden Tours took place on Oct. 9, 2022, from 10 AM-4 PM to raise money for two local charities. This event was a great chance to see the beautiful gardens of the local residences of Savannah while contributing to good causes.
A $20 ticket gives access to tours of 11 private gardens, five guest speakers, and the Garden Marketplace (a collection of local vendors from 10 AM-2 PM.) Food trucks and snack tents along the path and pets to play with or possibly adopt at the One Love Animal Rescue tent are available to whoever comes across those areas.
The gardens were at local residences spanning 4 blocks of the Habersham Woods and each house participating was marked with a green umbrella. Signs up and down the streets with arrows directed participants to the gardens, vendors, and booths. One Love Animal Rescue, a local animal rescue shelter, set up a booth where guests had the ability to adopt from their shelter, and Friends of Coastal Gardens, which provides financial and humanitarian support to the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm.
Each garden was different in design influence and layout, but all had an individual character that was transportive out of the city of Savannah. When asked what the best part of the Garden Tours was, Janice at the Friends of Coastal Gardens said, “It’s amazing! It’s like you’re in LA it's incredible.”
Some gardens had modern architecture with pools and fountains for an LA or Miami look, further shown in the flowers and plants throughout. Others took a peaceful approach with less focus color in the flowers and art, but sanctuary-like statues and running water for meditation and reflection. “This is exactly what I want my backyard to look like. Just a peaceful place for a glass of wine and pause for a moment,” said Savannah resident and mom of 3, Alex.
The Habersham Woods Garden Tours are an excellent opportunity to get a glimpse into the artistry that properties in Savannah have in just their backyard. The diversity in cultural influence shown throughout the gardens in the art, layout, and architecture reveal just how diverse Savannah is.
